Enhancement to Userplane’s Communication Toolset Debuts at Web 2.0 Conference, Enables JLove.com to Keep Members Plugged in 24/7 via Real-Time Desktop Alerts
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (November 7, 2006) -
Userplane, a premier communication
platform for online communities and a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL [NYSE: TWX], today
introduced Userplane Presence, a first-of-its-kind, private-label notification and
instant-messaging tool. It enables users to see who’s online, receive site notifications
and message each other - even when they’re not logged into their favorite communities.
The company made the announcement at the Web 2.0 Conference, here through November 9.
This breakthrough in direct user communication gives online communities of every size much
greater insight into their users’ “presence,” the ability to detect
which site members are online at any given time. Sites can now offer a simple desktop download
to their members. Once installed, Userplane Presence shows the member, at their discretion,
as constantly available within that community and sends real-time alerts whenever new events
occur.
“Until now, the only way site owners could turn the lights on and leverage their
live users was when users were logged in to the site itself,” said Michael Jones, CEO
of Userplane and vice president of AOL. “Now, Userplane Presence allows anyone to
broadcast and gather presence information from both the desktop and the supporting website.”
In late August, JLove.com
became the first site to deploy Userplane Presence. JLove members can download the tool, privately
branded as Instant JLove™, to their desktops. It alerts members in real-time when new
messages arrive, friends come online or others view their profiles - even when JLove users
are away from JLove.com.
“There’s been a rush to download Userplane Presence,” said Yoav Cohen,
JLove founder and CEO. “No one wants to miss an opportunity to connect with that special
someone, and Userplane Presence gives them extra discretion at work. Instead of taking up the
full screen, there’s just a tiny pop-up window that tells them who’s doing what.
Members can then decide whether to login to JLove now or wait until later.”
“The impact of Userplane Presence on consumers is simple, yet incredibly profound.
It means they can now be simultaneously part of communities and friend-groups Internet-wide,”
said Jones. “They no longer have to be logged in here or there to interact with their
friends. They can now literally be two places at one time - on their desktop or on the Web,
visiting any site or visiting no sites at all - and still see who’s available and still
get real-time messages.”
Userplane Presence can be deployed as a Web application, a desktop application or both. Site
owners can customize Userplane Presence with their own branding, messaging styles, navigation
menus and settings.
The Web version of Userplane Presence is a turn-key solution that allows any site to manage
who’s online and offline at any moment, simply by adding a few simple lines of code.
Used in conjunction with Userplane Webmessenger, an IM and chat tool featuring both live text
and steaming audio/video, it shows presence information for buddy lists when the user is logged
in to the participating site.
The desktop version is a lightweight, system-tray application that users can download at their
discretion. Userplane Presence users then enjoy “always-on” convenience without
having to stay logged in.
Like all Userplane products, Userplane Presence runs entirely on Userplane’s network
and is built for enterprise reliability. Site owners can deploy Userplane Presence with no
burden on their sites, networks or IT staff.
