Back to TopAll Userplane apps have a customizable API available.
Back to TopUserplane provides hosting for our web-based apps.
Back to TopInstant refers to the free, ad-supported, copy-and-paste version of our apps. It is intended for small websites with no login systems or user databases. Note that the Instant version, which can be installed in seconds, is only available for Webchat 2 and Webmessenger 2.
Integrated refers the API-driven, customizable version of our apps. It is appropriate for larger namespaces who want to authenticate logins and integrate our apps with their site databases. All Userplane apps are available in an Integrated version.
Back to TopIt is very simple. Just log into the directory, then click the MY ACCOUNT tab, then mouseover the MY COMMUNITIES menu item, then choose which community you want to delete. When the community profile page loads, you hit the EDIT button to get to the community properties page. At the top of this frame you will see a DELETE button which you can click.
Back to TopSimply log into the Userplane Directory with this account. Then click on the MY ACCOUNT tab and choose MY PROFILE. When the Profile page is loaded, click on the EDIT button, which will pop up your account page. At the bottom of this page is the “Delete Your Profile?” button which will allow you to delete your account.
Back to TopUserplane has tried to make getting started with the apps as easy as possible. The first step is to place an order from our website.
For Instant Install clients (Copy and Paste), go here: http://www.userplane.com/buy/index.cfm?&integration=1
Once you complete the simple Instant Install sign-up page, you will receive an email to confirm your order, and instanty have access to your Userplane Instant Install script to paste to your website.
For Integrated clients (Database Integration), go here: https://www.userplane.com/buy/index.cfm?&integration=2
Once you submit your Integrated order, you will receive a confirmation email with contact information for your Userplane representatives, as well as links to the API documents to get started. Simply follow the links in this email to download the XML files and your developer can get started immediately.
The Integrated process will require you to upload the XML file to your server and begin configuring and testing it. In order for Userplane to setup your Flashcom server, we will need to be sent the path to your XML file on your server [WMXML, CSXML or WRXML]. Contact your Userplane representaive as soon as you come across any questions.
Back to TopAll clients have access to the Userplane Apps Admin, used to check usage history, get updates on new features as well as download any documentation that may be needed for updates and new products.
In this Admin area, clients can pull up a graph illustrating peak concurrent connections for the last 30 days. Anything before 30 days can be accessed by month. In addition to overage usage, the Userplane API can allow for various types of user activity reporting, such as when a user logs out, when they log in, when they change rooms, etc. This particular reporting feature involves adding code on your end in the order to track which events you are interested in, and also to point to where you want that info stored.
Back to TopTo keep pace with the many changes that sweep through the online world, Userplane must occasionally update its Terms of Service (or TOS) and its Privacy Policy -- the terms that govern our relationship with our users. The expansion and evolution of Userplane’s business and services demand that Userplane change its terms and privacy policy at this time. You can review the updated TOS by going to http://www.userplane.com/TOS.cfm and you can review the updated Privacy Policy by going to http://about.aol.com/aolnetwork/aol_pp.
Please note that these changes will take effect on April 25th 2007 (4/25/07) and do not involve a price increase.
WHAT CHANGED?
The primary substance of the TOS remains the same. Specific changes to the Terms of Service are summarized as follows:
- We have become a part of the AOL Network, which will help us expand and improve our offerings of services and products to you. Section 5 of the TOS points out the information practices that will apply to you when you use Userplane as part of the AOL Network.
- In order to ensure the best possible experience for our users, we have updated Sections 7, 8 and 10 of the TOS to provide clear guidelines on what type of behavior we expect from you and our other users. In this updated section, we point out that we expect our users to comply with the law and our TOS, that we will not tolerate misconduct, and that we will hold our users accountable for all activities that occur under their accounts.
- We have added terms in Section 9 and 16 for the benefit of customers and developers who may be interested in using our application programming interfaces (“APIs”) that we are making available on Userplane.
- We have updated our billing terms in Sections 11 through 13 to make sure that we have your authorization to bill you for any purchases that you make from us through the payment method that you provide to us.
- In Section 15, we include license terms to give you the express right to use our applications and services provided that you abide by our terms.
- In Section 25, we advise you that we are not responsible for the actions of third party sites that may offer Userplane applications. Your use of Userplane applications on these third party sites are subject to the privacy policies posted on those sites.
WHAT CHANGED WITH THE PRIVACY POLICY?
As a newly acquired subsidiary of AOL LLC, we now have the ability to leverage the services, features and operational support from AOL in order to help us improve our offerings and services to you. Therefore, we have become part of the enhanced web sites, products and services of the AOL Network. The AOL Network Privacy Policy explains the practices that will apply to your information when you use Userplane and other features of the AOL Network. Moreover, the policy explains the choices you can make about the ways this information is used by the AOL Network. We encourage you to review the AOL Network Privacy Policy. Please note that this policy does not apply to information about you collected by the third party web sites that may offer or give you access to Userplane applications. These third party sites and services are subject to their own privacy policies.
Your ongoing use of Userplane signifies your acceptance of the changes described above. If you do not agree to the changes, you may cancel your Userplane services.

Back to TopThe Userplane presence system will keep track of all the users that you want to be listed as online. This means that we will handle the back-end for making sure that their online status is maintained while they are on your site as well as handle the opening of any IM windows. You will have control over what users are listed as online and available for IM's, and each of these users would be considered a connected user. If you wanted all of the users logged into your site to be able to receive IM's then every user that is logged in would be counted as a connected user. If you had a system that allowed guests to visit the site, or had any membership levels that didn't allow for receiving IM's then these users would not be counted.
Back to TopYes we do, and it is open to all paid integrated accounts. If you chose the Free integrated package then you will not be able to do a revenue share.
Revenue sharing means that you can now make advertising money from your Userplane. Per the request of many of our subscribers, we have released a new function that will allow you to embed Userplane provided text and banner advertising on your Userplane Webchat and Webmessenger.
This allows you to see ad-based revenue from your users through the Userplane system. Userplane handles all ad sales, and provides a 50% monthly pay-out based on your ad views to all our clients that utilize this system.
This is an completely optional feature that you need to opt-into if you wish to display ads on your Userplane Applications. To get started, just email support@userplane.com requesting a setup for your ad revenue share account. This account is separate and will not effect your Userplane Application cost, but will be a separate payment made to you monthly based on the advertising revenue generated through your Userplane Applications.
Here is a file that contains some additional info you will need to get started!
Back to TopYes we do! Userplane has partnered with website script providers so that our apps are set up as turnkey features. Here is a list of those providers:

Back to TopThe Apps Admin system is where you can check your usage history, get the latest integration and help docs and also see the list of upgrades by version number. Every client gets a login to this system when they sign up, and will be where they go to get the integration docs.
Back to TopYour selected Userplane package includes a specified amount of transferred bandwidth. To find your allocated bandwidth amount, simply reference your package type at http://www.userplane.com/buy/. This bandwidth allocation includes both incoming and outgoing bandwidth to the Userplane servers. Typically the bandwidth allocated to each connection/bandwidth pairing should be appropriate for single audio/video stream use. Enabling the Userplane Multi-User Audio/Video in the Webchat could cause you to exceed your allocated bandwidth.
When you login to the Userplane App Admin, you can see your current bandwidth usage. Any additional bandwidth used beyond that of your selected package will be billed at $1/GB used.
If you wish to reduce your bandwidth usage, you can do one of the following:
a. Discontinue use of the audio/video feature
b. Allocate audio/video privileges to certain user types
c. Lower the bandwidth stream size in your XML document
For additional questions, please contact support@userplane.com.
Back to TopNot all characters will work for sessionGUID's or userID's. The following are the characters that will work for these;
a-z A-Z 0-9
{ } @ _ - .
Thus spaces and particularly < and > will not work. For questions about this email Userplane Support.
Back to TopThe fundamental difference between these versions is that the Instant-Install doesn't connect to your database, so you will not need to integrate with your existing system at all, simply copy and paste the HTML provided and you are ready to go. The integrated version requires that you use a database to manage your users and store their information. The various benefits of each version are below.
Instant-Install
-Copy and paste installation
-Userplane maintains database and login system
-Includes default forbidden words list,
-Month to month
-No setup fee
Integrated
-Integrated installation into your website
-Allows for custom branding
-Allows for custom smileys
-Allows for direct integration into your user DB and login system
-Allows for restriction on who has access to audio/video
-Allows integration into your billing system and allows for tiered upgrades
-Allows for custom set of audio / video bandwidth usage
-Allows for custom set number of characters input and flood control
-Allows for custom forbidden word list
-Month to month
Back to TopFlash has a number of benefits:
Flash is more flexible and stable than Java or other browser based languages used for older Chat systems.
Flash is pre-installed on Windows XP
The Flash front end allows for limitless design possibilities, additions and features.
Because Flash is installed on nearly 90% of all browsers, the Chat just works with one click - with nothing to download, install, or hassle with.
Flash is completely cross platform - PC or MAC.
The Flash structure allows for the simple integration of audio and video communication using Macromedia's Flash Communication Server.
Back to TopYes. Most of Userplane's clients host their own user database, in which case the security of the database will not be affected.
Back to TopWhen we set you up with a Flash Com server one of the things we do is setup a DNS alias and give you an image server name. The image server we create will simply be an alias for your domain. For example;
images.yourdomain.userplane.com
is an alias of,
yourdomain.com
So when you go to the image server address you will actually be going to your site. We have to do this in order to get around the built in security of the Flash Plugin. The Flash Plugin will not reliably load images that appear to come from a server different from the one that the app comes from. Thus by creating an image server and using that in the path to the image, the plugin will 'think' that the images and the app are all coming from Userplane. In order for this to work it is necessary that your server allow requests from userplane.com. An example of how to use this is;
Actual path http://www.yourdomain.com/images/userimage.jpg
Path to use in the XML http://images.yourdomain.userplane.com/images/userimage.jpg
Thus all you need to do is substitute the image server name for the actual domain name, and everything should load successfully.
Back to TopSome web accelerator software is known to cause problems with the XML portion of the integration. A known issue is with a product by port80software.com. The issue here is with the generation of the XML page. If the file that generates the XML is going through this software it will not parse correctly and will subsequently not send our servers the proper info. To work around these types of problems it is necessary to either exclude the file that generates the XML from the program, or host it somewhere that is not running through the accelerator program. The other files that are part of the integration should be unaffected.
Back to TopUserplane currently does not support off-site hosting of its applications. We have found that hosting within the Userplane network provides higher quality connections, bandwidth and increased uptime. If you wish discuss Userplanes hosting operations or you have a specific unique case that requires self-hosting, please contact us to discuss.
Back to TopYes. The app will allow or deny users based on your user database. Users trying to use the app will not have to login a second time, but will be granted direct access based on your user database.
Back to TopThe Apps Inspector is your interface with the FlashCom server your apps run on.
It can be found here; http://apps.userplane.com/inspector.html
To login enter the FlashCom server name in the 'Host' field and the same username and password that you use for the Apps Admin system.
The Apps Inspector allows you to see any errors that are being returned and troubleshoot any issues. This is also where you will go to reload the app if you ever make any changes to the getDomainPreferences section of the XML.
The getDomainPreferences call only happens when the app starts up, so any values set their when changes will require a reload.
To reload an app instance select the instance from the list you are presented with when you first sign on and click 'View Detail'. This will open the 'Live Log' tab for that particular instance. There is a button in the top right 'Reload App' that you will need to press. You will get a prompt letting you know that reloading the instance will disconnect all active users. If you click yes the app will reload and then once it has finished the users will be back in.
The Apps Inspector will always show the URL associated with an error, so whenever something is not working right in the app be sure to check the live log in the Apps Inspector to see what error is occurring.
Back to TopBefore doing anything, make sure that your webcam and/or microphone are connected to your computer. Once they are connected, Macromedia Flash will automatically detect any cameras and audio sources for the chat.
If you have not seen the privacy screen from Flash pop-up when you start the chat click on the 'settings' button located in the 'Me' window, then navigate to the 'Privacy' tab. Make sure that you "allow userplane.com to access your camera and microphone."
Once you have set access permissions to Macromedia Flash Player, while still in the Settings window, navigate to the camera and microphone tabs and make sure that the computer is detecting your camera and microphone. Select the camera/microphone you are using and click on 'close'. The audio and video should now be set up.
Back to TopThis refers to the estimated daily visitors to your site. This is included as a way for you to forecast the number of connections you will need. On average we have seen that for every 1000 daily visitors a site will use one simultaneous connection.
Back to TopThis refers to the maximum amount of data that you can send/receive to/from our servers. This includes all the data your users send and receive in our app, so any audio and video used will be part of this number. Each package allows for a certain amount of data transfer, additional bandwidth can be purchased at $1/GB.
Back to Top"Simul. Connections" or "Simul. A/V Connections" refers to the total number of people using the application on your site at a given time. This is what the packages are primarily based on. Every-time a user opens the application they are connecting to our servers and constitute a simultaneous connection. We never block users from connecting - users will never be denied access due to package limits. If you are consistently going over your package we will simply request that you upgrade, we also don't charge for overage.
Back to TopThis refers to the number of users that are using the Webrecorder at the same time either creating or viewing recordings. Every user that has the Webrecorder open in their browser counts as a simultaneous viewer. We never block users from connecting so your users will not be denied access because of the package limits. If you are consistently going over your package we will simply request that you upgrade - we don't charge for overage.
Back to TopThis refers to the number of messages/recordings that you can store for the given package. If a client exceeds the limit on their package we will request that they upgrade to the next level - we will never deny access due to a client reaching their package limit.
Back to TopThis refers to the amount of drive space that is included in your package. Just like with stored messages, if a client exceeds their limit we will request that they upgrade to the next level - we will never deny access based on a client reaching their package limit.
